An Introduction To La Gomera Beaches

A typical La Gomera beach is small with black volcanic sand or shingle. Picture quiet (almost deserted) bays with crystal clear turquoise waters between dramatic craggy cliffs.

Some beaches within the towns are busier with amenities nearby, while others can only be reached via boat or on foot. However, if you are prepared to walk, you are often rewarded with an entire beach.

However, a word of caution is that swimming in the sea on La Gomera can be dangerous, especially during the winter. The island can be windy with large waves and powerful currents, especially during high tide.

Some beaches aren't suitable for swimming (especially for children) at any time of year, while others are more sheltered and generally safe. Before swimming on any La Gomera beach, we recommend you take the advice of a local tourist office.

An Overview Of Playa Del Medio La Gomera

Playa del Medio is a stunning, partially sandy beach that is relatively easy to access from Playa Santiago. The beach is free of buildings. You will just find crystal-clear water, crashing waves, and spectacular cliffs and caves.

When we visited, people were camping in makeshift shelters in caves, but it is a pretty large beach suitable for anyone looking for peace and quiet. Note that there is a good chance that you will come across nudists here.

Prepare For Your Visit To Playa Del Medio La Gomera

There are a few things it is worth noting before visiting this beach:

  1. Sunburn - The coastal winds on La Gomera mean that sunburn is common. The sun here is powerful, and the cooling breeze can fool you into thinking you are not at risk.
  2. Stones - The beach is a mix of sand and rock, so take suitable shoes for the water if you plan on going in.
  3. Winds, Waves and Tides - It is worth repeating that all beaches on La Gomera can be dangerous. We did see people swimming at Playa del Medio, but the beach slopes, and we can imagine the waves would be enormous on a windy day. Make sure you are fully aware of the conditions before swimming.

Playa Del Medio La Gomera

Playa del Medio can be accessed by car via a narrow road or on foot. The beach lies east of Playa Santiago, around a 4 km drive from Hotel Tecina or 6 km from the town centre. There is a small free car park or, if this is full, there is space to park on the access road.

If you feel energetic, you can also walk the 6 km to this beach. Unfortunately, there isn't a route around the base of the cliff, so you will need to climb up and down the cliffs and ravines. Also, there is barely any shade on the route, so it may not be pleasant in the heat of the summer.
